The ford 9" housing your using is an OE housing. Its meant to have the backing plate behind the bearing retainer. New 9" housings have a wider bearing area that wont support drum brakes. I wrote an article in bronco Driver about converting this to rear disks and it includes cutting the drum backing plate to fit with the bearing retainer. Crushing it down is not going to seal properly. I also recommend flipping the retainer so the open portion is on the top to help keep the gear oil in. Let me know if you would like a copy of the article in Bronco Driver.

You can break things on a bulldozer by doing the wrong things with it. So you're rational behind going out and trying to see if you can push things beyond where they should be expected to go. Probably isn't a real sound way of looking at things. Beefing things up simply means that you're going to be transferring the stress and strain to another part or component. Sometimes it's not what you're doing with your vehicles it's how your doing it. Your Recovery vehicles are Derby cars. Just some thoughts. There's an old saying. People won't take the time to do things right the first time. But always find the time, or make time to do them over again. Love your content, and your video shooters and editors do an awesome job.

You have to wonder about the lack of planning or situational awareness of some people. If you are going to be running trails like this you better be prepared and capable of, at the least, self recovery. Think about what you are doing before you get stuck. With 100+ temps, little water and no cell service this could easily have been a body recovery along with the SxS. It's always a good idea to have a second vehicle along, especially in these conditions.

Matt, consider hauling a couple of old tires with you that you could strap to the back of your wrecker for softer contact of towed vehicles. Eddie

My 2020 Ram 1500 4x4 when trying to hook a trailer up by myself you can not back up or go forward with door open. And I leave my equalizer hitch in all the time to dang heavy. Had the rear sensors on and started backing up in driveway and automatically stopped me dead in my tracks. scared the you no what out of me

Welding with 7018 stick weld is a much stronger well than the squirt welding machine. TIG welding which I did for 45 years makes a classy weld if done right

Mig welders are nothing but squirt guns
